Contraindications, Before & Aftercare

IPL


Absolute

Treatments cannot be done without a GP letter

  • Skin Pigmentary conditions
  • Epilepsy
  • Liver or Kidney disease
  • Cancer of any form at any time
  • Coronary/blood pressure conditions
  • Cardiovascular
  • Use of anti-coagulation medication
  • Transplant
  • Implanted devices
  • Haemophilia
  • Connective tissue disorders
  • Auto-immune conditions
  • History of keloid scarring
  • Lupus or Reynaud's disease
  • Thrombosis or Thrombophlebitis
  • Gold salt therapy


Conditional

If you suspect you suffer from any of the following, you should be checked by a GP before treatment

  • Hepes/cold sores. if this is visible in the area to be treated, then the appointment would need to be rearranged until this has cleared up
  • Bacterial infections treatment cannot be done over the affected area
  • Diabetes If the condition is under control and there is no history or recurring skin infections
  • Scarring/burns/skin grafts Scarring or skin grafts cannot be treated if less than 6 months old. Treatment cannot be done directly over burns
  • Psoriasis Flare ups may be induced by treatment
  • Recent Surgery treatment may vary due to the nature of the surgery.
  • Allergies Depends on the type of allergy
  • Varicose Veins Treatment cannot be done directly over this area
  • Melanoma/Tattoos treatment may not be be done directly over these areas and they must be covered.
  • Photosensitivity should not be treated
  • Metal Implants/screws treatment can only be done over these areas if agreed by your GP
  • Hormonal or Thyroid disorders if there is no other contraindications treatment is allowed but my require more treatments
  • Impaired skin sensation a patch test with additional assessment to check for comfort
  • Severe asthma/ COPD please check with your GP before booking
  • Silicone Implants Treatment may not be possible directly over this area



Temporary

Treatment cannot be done until the these conditions are no longer present

  • Pregnancy/Breastfeeding Treatment can start when normal periods have started and no longer breastfeeding
  • Recent waxing/ Plucking you must wait 6 weeks before any IPL hair removal, Skin Rejuvernation is fine
  • Photosensitising medication Treatment can be done once the medication has left the system
  • St. John's Wort you must wait 4 weeks until you have stopped taking before treatment can start.
  • Tanned Skin (natural or fake) you must wait 4 weeks following exposure before you have the treatment. or until the tan has faded if fake.
  • Bruised or Mottled skin Treatment cannot be done directly over this area
  • Anti-inflammatory Medication you must wait at least 24 hours before treatment depending on the type of medication
  • Antibiotics Wait at least 4 weeks after you have stopped taking the medication.
  • Topical Medication you may have to wait for your treatment depending on the medication
  • Alcoholism there is a risk of bruising. Please seek advise from your GP
  • Steroid or hormone therapy oral and topical steroids must be discontinued for at least 4 weeks before treatments. Hormone (e.g. HRT) can affect the results of the treatment.
  • Fillers/Botox you must wait at least 2 weeks before IPL treatments can b e done in that area.
  • IVF You must wait until you are no longer receiving treatment. I f you are pregnant or breastfeeding, treatment cannot be done.
  • Photodynamic Therapy You must wait at least 6 months after you have stopped any medication before treatment.



In order for your treatment to be successful and effective, and to avoid any adverse effects, it is important to follow all the pre- and post treatment advice as indicated below



Before your treatment

  • Avoid skin exposure to strong UV (sun or tanning beds) or self tan for 4 weeks before, after and between treatments
  • Shave any hair in the treatment area 24 hours prior to treatment
  • Avoid alcohol or smoking the night before and on the day of the treatment
  • Do not wear any make-up, lotions or creams on the treatment area on the day of the treatment
  • Do not use bleaching creams or perfumed products for 4 weeks prior to the treatment
  • Do not exercise before your treatment
  • Avoid exfoliating or microdermabrasion for at least 1 week before treatment
  • Keep the intended treatment area clean and dry
  • Hydrate the body and skin by drinking plenty of water



Aftercare


  • A cold compress may be applied to the treatment area if it feels hot or uncomfortable
  • Apply Aloe Vera gel to relieve any sensation of sunburn or itching
  • Avoid restrictive clothes over the treatment area
  • Avoid use of creams containing salicylic or glycolic acid
  • Avoid shaving or using deodorant or perfumes in the treatment area for 48 hours
  • Avoid swimming, saunas, hot tubs or hot showers for 1 week
  • Avoid aerobic exercise for 24 hours
  • Avoid sun exposure - use a strong sunblock (SPF 30+) if sun exposure is unavoidable
  • Avoid excessive scrubbing or exfoliation of the skin for 1 week
  • Do not use self-tanning products for 1 week
  • Do not pick or scratching any crusting of the skin
  • Do not undergo any waxing, tweezing or threading for the duration of the treatment course
  • Keep the area clean and dry for 48 hours
